How Orb expanded its integrations to serve enterprise brands with Rutter
Learn how Orb partnered with Rutter to ship a complex NetSuite integration in just 2.5 weeks and slash sandbox setup costs in half.
“Just getting the NetSuite sandbox set up would have been cost-prohibitive. Plus, it would've taken at least a month in engineering to build the integration. We definitely saved time there thanks to Rutter.”
Invoicing is a key feature of Orb’s billing solution.
- Within Orb’s system, tech companies can view their invoice drafts throughout the month, monitoring usage and spending accrual in real-time.
- Once those invoices are issued, Orb users often want to export and send them out via platforms like QuickBooks and NetSuite.
While Orb had already built a series of Stripe and QuickBooks integrations, the team quickly realized integrating with NetSuite would be much more complex.
Their first attempted solution was offering an invoice export, where customers could upload a tailored file to their NetSuite instance. However, this extra lift wasn’t sustainable for larger teams with a large set of invoices that required more automation..
So, Orb’s team proactively decided to build the integration in-house to make exporting invoices effortless. Yet, as they discussed their options with NetSuite, it became clear that building from scratch would be costly and time-consuming. According to Kshitij Grover, Co-Founder & CTO at Orb:
To launch a NetSuite integration without draining time and resources, the Orb team knew they needed an experienced API provider to navigate several complexities.
- Since NetSuite also serves as an ERP tool, Orb needed to build more than a simple one-way invoicing sync.
- Some Orb customers requested functionality for pushing accounting data into NetSuite, which would simplify allocation, scheduling, and reporting.
- Orb’s enterprise clients needed even more advanced accounting integrations to streamline their revenue recognition processes.
While Orb explored a few API options, Rutter was the clear frontrunner. We offered the precise invoicing and accounting flow Orb needed, as well as a ready-made NetSuite integration.
On our first demo call, Rutter showed the Orb team what their potential NetSuite integration could look like in action — and they were ready to sign on.
“Based on the demo alone, it was obvious that Rutter could support what we wanted. They helped us ship our NetSuite integration within two-and-a-half weeks.”

Some Orb customers requested functionality for pushing accounting data into NetSuite, which would simplify allocation, scheduling, and reporting. With Rutter, Orb saved 50% of the cost in setting up a NetSuite sandbox environment.
Since NetSuite also serves as an ERP tool, Orb needed to build more than a simple one-way invoicing sync. Orb added advanced two-way syncs to support enterprise clients leveraging Rutter's Unified API.
With Rutter, Orb can easily ship integrations in weeks — rather than months
After partnering up, the Rutter team immediately set up a NetSuite sandbox — enabling Orb to ship its integration in less than three weeks.
Thanks to Rutter’s Accounting API, the Orb team felt confident that they were tackling the integration as effectively as possible.
Here’s a snapshot of the savings Rutter has driven for Orb so far:
- 2.5 weeks to ship first integration (down from estimated timeline of 2+ months)
- 50% cost savings on setting up a NetSuite sandbox
- Added advanced two-way syncs to support enterprise clients
Looking forward, Rutter has given Orb a foundation to efficiently build out and deploy future integrations. When customers ask for expanded platform coverage, Orb knows they’ll be able to deliver on a clear, accelerated timeline.
“Since building this foundation with Rutter, when customers want a new integration, we can spin it up in a week. This kind of client support has even become a lever to help us close larger enterprise deals.”
